Barrel Proof Notes by Old Route One LLC

Welcome, Bourbon and Whiskey Lovers!

Barrel Proof Notes by Old Route One is a place for people who enjoy whiskey, want to know more about what’s in their glass, and appreciate an honest opinion from someone who enjoys the journey as much as they do.

We taste what we actually drink, write what we actually think, and share what we learn along the way. No hype. No pretension. Just Honest Scores for Your Pours and stories we think are worth telling along the way.

Taking the Scenic Route

Kentucky gets most of the bourbon glory—and fair enough. The Bourbon Trail earned it. But the story of American whiskey is much bigger than Kentucky.

Long before Bardstown became bourbon country, distillers throughout the Atlantic seaboard were turning corn, rye, and other local grains into whiskey. Many of those distilleries disappeared during Prohibition and never returned. But the history didn’t disappear with them.

Follow historic U.S. Route 1 today—from New England through the Mid-Atlantic and the Carolinas, into Georgia and eventually Florida—and you’ll find another American whiskey story unfolding. Small and independent distilleries are reviving local traditions, experimenting with regional grains, building new traditions of their own, and making some remarkably good whiskey along the way.

Those are stories we want to tell.

We’ll still visit Kentucky. We’ll still pour the great legacy brands, explore their histories, and give them the attention they deserve. But we’ll also pull off the main road to find the smaller distillery you may not have heard about, revisit a forgotten brand, explain why an old dusty bottle matters, and introduce you to a few you might otherwise have passed on the shelf.

If Kentucky is the interstate, consider Barrel Proof Notes the scenic route—slower, a little less traveled, and full of people, places, bottles, and stories worth stopping for.

For the Whiskey Nerd in All of Us

Some of our favorite stories aren’t bottle reviews at all.

Our Whiskey Nerd articles go behind the scenes of bourbon and American whiskey to explore its history, heritage, business, craftsmanship, and occasional oddities.

Why does Bottled in Bond matter? Does the shape of a bottle tell us anything? Why are whiskey corks and stoppers more interesting than they have any right to be? What happened to a forgotten distillery that once made whiskey just down the road? And what are today’s smaller distillers doing differently?

Sometimes we’ll answer questions you’ve wondered about. Other times, we hope you’ll finish an article thinking: “Huh. I didn’t know that.”

Either way, you’ll have something new to talk about the next time you share a pour with your bourbon buddies.

Our Tasting Philosophy

Every bottle we review receives the same thoughtful evaluation.

We don’t score based on hype, rarity, allocation, or secondary-market prices. We focus on what’s actually in the glass. A famous Kentucky label doesn’t get a pass because of the name on the bottle, and a small craft distillery doesn’t get bonus points because we like its story.

Our reviews reflect our own tasting experience and follow the same published methodology. If you’d like to know exactly how we evaluate Appearance, Aroma, Flavor, Finish, and arrive at the Barrel Proof Score, you can read our Our Review Process.

And remember: a review is an opinion, not a verdict.

Your palate may disagree with ours—and that’s part of the fun. Tell us where you think we got it wrong. Share what you tasted. Tell us about a bottle we should try or a Whiskey Nerd subject we should investigate.

The conversation is part of the journey.

Bourbon Was Made to Be Enjoyed

We’re not here to chase unicorns or admire bottles too expensive to open.

We believe bourbon was made to be poured, shared, discussed, and enjoyed.

Maybe you’re building your first home bar. Maybe you’ve been drinking bourbon for thirty years. Maybe you’re planning a Bourbon Trail trip, hunting down an overlooked local distillery, or simply sitting on the back porch on a cool fall evening with a neat pour while the sun goes down.

There’s a place for you here.

Barrel Proof Notes is about good whiskey, interesting stories, learning something new, and the conversations that happen when people share something they enjoy.

So pour something you like, pull up a chair, and stay awhile.

There is always another bottle to taste, another story to discover, and another reason to take the scenic route.

Welcome to Barrel Proof Notes.
