Halloween at America’s East Coast Distilleries
There are spirits in the glass, and then there are spirits that supposedly go bump in the night.
This October, a handful of East Coast distilleries are having some fun with both.
From paranormal investigations inside a former North Carolina prison to Halloween cocktail classes in Maryland and Virginia, distilleries along our Route One Corridor are proving that whiskey culture extends well beyond the tasting room.
We’ve been looking into what our distillery friends have planned for the rest of October. Some are embracing their haunted histories, others are putting a seasonal twist on their cocktails, and a few are simply celebrating the arrival of fall.
Here are some events that caught our attention.
Southern Grace Distilleries: The Whiskey Prison Gets Spooky
Mount Pleasant, North Carolina | October 17, 24, 30 and 31

If there’s one distillery that seems almost purpose-built for Halloween, it’s Southern Grace.
Located inside a former correctional facility, Southern Grace has turned an unusual piece of North Carolina history into one of the most memorable distillery experiences we’ve encountered.
We visited the Whiskey Prison in September, and the old cell blocks, solitary confinement areas, and surrounding buildings made quite an impression. Now imagine exploring that property after dark.
Convicted Spirits Investigations
On October 17, 24, and 31, Southern Grace lists nighttime paranormal investigations beginning at 7 p.m. An experienced investigator guides guests through areas of the property where unusual activity has reportedly been detected.
Whether you’re a believer in ghosts or simply fascinated by old buildings and their histories, it’s an intriguing way to experience the Whiskey Prison.
Spoken Spirits: October 30
The Uwharrie Players will present Spoken Spirits inside the Whiskey Prison Chapel, featuring original performances inspired by local haunted history.
There’s something wonderfully appropriate about listening to ghost stories inside a former prison chapel. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Uwharrie Players.
Halloween Day: October 31
Southern Grace also plans an all-day Halloween gathering from noon until 7 p.m., including complimentary distillery tours and seasonal activities. Scheduled tour times are 12:30, 2:00, and 3:30 p.m.
Why you should go: Southern Grace is the standout Halloween destination on this year’s list. The history is real, the setting is remarkable, and the distillery doesn’t need elaborate decorations to create an atmosphere.

Sagamore Spirit: Halloween with a Maryland Rye Accent
Baltimore, Maryland | October dates to be confirmed
Sagamore Spirit is bringing Halloween into the cocktail classroom at its waterfront distillery in Baltimore.

Known for its Maryland rye whiskey, Sagamore has listed two seasonal experiences.
Sips and Stems
This one combines Halloween-themed cocktail making with flower arranging. Participants prepare festive cocktails with the Sagamore team before creating a seasonal bouquet with Dandelions Flower Stand.
It’s a different sort of distillery evening, one that combines craftsmanship behind the bar with a little autumn creativity.
Here for the Boo-ze
Sagamore’s second Halloween-themed experience focuses on seasonal cocktail preparation, giving participants an opportunity to explore festive ingredients and mixing techniques.
The distillery’s website describes both programs, although we could not independently confirm their October 2026 dates.
Why you should go: Sagamore’s Halloween programming shows how a rye-focused distillery can introduce visitors to whiskey through experiences that are approachable, social, and educational.
A. Smith Bowman: Spooky Sips in Virginia
Fredericksburg, Virginia | Sunday, October 18, noon to 1 p.m.
A. Smith Bowman Distillery is celebrating the season with its Holiday Cocktail Series, and October’s theme is Spooky Sips.
Each session begins with a guided distillery tour, followed by a hands-on cocktail class featuring one of Bowman’s spirits.
Guests learn about the distillery and cocktail preparation, then enjoy their creations and receive a recipe to recreate the experience at home.
The October 18 session runs from noon until 1 p.m. The series continues in November with Fall Forward and December with Winter Wonderland.
Why you should go: Bowman offers a more traditional distillery experience, combining a little bourbon education with a seasonal cocktail twist. It’s an appealing stop for whiskey enthusiasts exploring the Virginia portion of our Route One Corridor.
A Halloween Candy Pairing?
KO Distilling Says Yes
Manassas, Virginia | Sunday, October 18, 1 to 3 p.m.
Here’s an idea that caught our attention.
KO Distilling is hosting its annual Spirited Experience: A Halloween Spirits & Candy Pairing, pairing four award-winning spirits with different Halloween candies.
The lineup includes the distillery’s Bare Knuckle cask-strength wheat and rye whiskeys, along with its Distiller’s Reserve Bottled-in-Bond Wheated Bourbon and Battle Standard Navy Strength Gin.
The experience is led by whiskey steward Greg Rixon and explores how sweet, salty, and chocolate flavors can change the way we perceive a spirit.
We spend plenty of time discussing how food influences whiskey tasting. This sounds like a particularly entertaining way to explore that relationship.
Our take: This may be the most interesting event for readers who enjoy the sensory side of whiskey. It combines tasting education with something familiar from childhood, although the whiskey portion is strictly for adults.

Firefly Distillery: A Lowcountry Fall Celebration
North Charleston, South Carolina | October 17 and 25
Not every October distillery event needs ghosts and cobwebs.
Firefly Distillery is celebrating the season with a couple of outdoor gatherings at its North Charleston property.
On Saturday, October 17, the distillery hosts its Fall Food Truck Feastival from noon until 4 p.m. The afternoon includes more than 15 food trucks, a vendor market, locally grown pumpkins, and live music from Hotel Hugo. Admission is free.
On Sunday, October 25, Firefly kicks off its Oyster Roast Series from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., featuring oysters, live music from the Shakin’ Martinis, and an afternoon beside Noisette Creek.
These are fall celebrations rather than Halloween-specific events, but they deserve a mention for readers who prefer their October outings without paranormal investigations.
Why you should go: Firefly continues to demonstrate that a distillery can be a community gathering place, not simply somewhere whiskey and other spirits are produced.
One Last Pour: The Best Stories Aren’t Always in the Bottle
What makes these events interesting isn’t necessarily the cocktails or the Halloween costumes.
It’s the opportunity to experience a distillery in a different way.
At Southern Grace, the history of an old prison becomes part of the evening. At Sagamore, Maryland rye provides the foundation for a creative seasonal experience. At Bowman, visitors can connect distillery history with the craft of cocktail making.
And at KO Distilling, Halloween candy becomes an unlikely tasting companion.
These are the kinds of experiences we enjoy discovering along the Route One Corridor. They remind us that American whiskey is about more than what’s aging inside a barrel. It’s also about the places, people, history, and communities surrounding the distilleries.
If you’ve attended a Halloween event at a distillery, we’d enjoy hearing about it.
And if you know of another East Coast distillery hosting something unusual this October, tell us. We’re always interested in another good whiskey story.
Until next time, enjoy the journey on the Scenic Route and the stories along the way.
